32 Volcanes
Memory / Dignity / Future

The volcanoes will be there when we are no longer here, and that is what we hope will happen with our work: that it will be a seed that will sprout in more worthy and just futures for all.
In January 2019 Foundation Todos Juntos began a new partnership with old friends and collaborators, Carmencita de Alvarado and Roney Alvarado.  We are proud to support the work of 32 Volcanes and their educational, health, nutrition, and environmental projects in the Western Highlands of Guatemala.  Headquartered in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala 32 Volcanes is a new Guatemalan non-profit organization created with the intention of promoting integral social projects in diverse communities in Guatemala.

This new organization comes from the 26 years of experience of Carmencita de Alvarado and Roney Alvarado in the management of Asociación Pop Wuj’s projects (based in the city of Quetzaltenango).  32 Volcanes has been created not only to maintain and develop educational, health, nutrition, and environmental projects, but also to broaden their meaning and turn them into a form of mutual collective learning that will ensure that this experience becomes a path of integral development for the Guatemalan people.

Why 32 Volcanes?
A mountain range of 32 volcanoes crosses the entire Guatemalan territory.  The name of this organization refers to one of the most emblematic characteristics of our country. With the name “32 Volcanes” we want to communicate our interest for the common welfare of all the peoples that inhabit Guatemala.

Although the social work of 32 Volcanes is primarily concentrated in different communities of the Western Highlands of Guatemala, the association has considered the possibility of growing, not just taking their projects to different regions of the country, rather joining with parallel initiatives to integrate a larger community, interested in the equal rights and dignity of all people and ways of life in Guatemala. In short, our name and the three concepts that are included in our slogan (Memory / Dignity / Future) appeal to the symbolic link that exists between the communities and the land they inhabit:

  • Volcanoes evoke memory, because they have always been here, because they have been witnesses to the lights and shadows of our history.
  • Volcanoes are companions of the present, because they shape the environment in which our lives unfold. That makes them identity symbols that the inhabitants of the country recognize as their own.
  • The volcanoes will be there when we are no longer here, and that is what we hope will happen with our work: that it will be a seed that will sprout in more worthy and just futures for all.

We will grow with community work, empathy, and thought toward the service of our country.  We work for human rights and social justice with processes that highlight dignity, promote happiness, and the spirit of individual and collective life. Our vision is to build networks of mutual support for a sustainable world for all forms of life.
